Career in Entrepreneurship

By: Vishesh Gupta

How big will you dream if you know you can’t fail? Something that you fell so out of reach that you doubted that it could ever happen?

I know exactly how that feels.

I am an International student from India and came to the US with $300 in my pocket. I had nothing but big dreams and ambitions in my eyes.

In fact, this was the first time I was traveling in a plane and leaving my country. Today, in about a year and a half, we have built a Tech Company (Techrupt Innovations) that is building Tech for more than 8 US startups, and we have an equity stake in each of them. We have been working with companies from all sectors, including fintech, ed-tech, OTT, dating, and AI platforms.

The best gift I got is having high risk-taking ability.

I think of myself as a poker player. I go all in.

It’s what excites me the most in life. Risk is love. Risk is life. Let me phrase it another way, what is there to lose?

Nothing. I had nothing to lose.

As they say, nothing is more dangerous than a desperate man with nothing to lose. I was a 19-year-old guy with little money in his pocket who came from land seven seas beyond. Actually, there was a little to lose and a heck lot to gain.

I went all in.

Connected with a lot of people, cold-emailed, and built connections. I had 0 fear of rejection and 0 shyness left. I had to do it. There wasn’t a choice.

The day of glory: I met my co-founder (Ben Chrzanowski). I was sitting in the entrepreneurship club at UMass, and it was filled entirely; just one vacant seat was right beside me. Ben sat there and introduced himself. We instantly vibed and started talking.

We had two big common interests: VC Investments and Tech. It was 8:15. I met him, and we were still sitting in the bartlett hall(Entre Club room) until 12:30. We discussed everything from startups and innovation to raising funds and tech.

By then, we both knew we had to do something together. It’s one of the best feelings in life to meet someone as motivated to make money as you. We were able to see that in each other’s eyes.

We discussed Techrupt’s idea of building Tech for high-growth startups the same week, and within the second week of our company incorporation, we had our first deal.

That feeling of holding the first check in your hand. That’s the best feeling in the world. The first check was for $2000. That was a considerable amount of money for me at that time.

Right now, one of our startups is looking to raise $4M and $50M pre-money, and we are a 30 people team now. 26 employees and four founders. I have come a long way.

Leverage

Understanding Leverage remains the utmost crucial entrepreneurial skill. Understanding how to leverage people, time, and money can take you places.

Money is determined by three things: Unfair advantages, skill, and luck. At least, that's what I read from the book - the psychology of money. Continuing to acquire skills, for example, in our company, we have talent from all across domains, including backend and frontend developers to even game designers and AI engineers.

We kept expanding. Look around for your unfair advantages, and try spotting opportunities around that. There are tons of them; it’s about doing the work and giving your best. And luck, luck follows when you nail the first 2 ;)

Nature

You must have heard it before, but I’ll repeat it, the Universe is extremely rewarding. It’s absolutely and utterly giving. It follows and helps you achieve what you truly want.

You eat right, go to the gym, and sleep well - you’ll be in good shape. You spot opportunities, connect with people, and enjoy doing this - you’ll make good money.

It's simple.

No matter how big you think, if you are ready to work for it, you’ll get it. Nature follows you, observes you, and helps you reach there. It acts as a catalyst. Go get it.

It’s been a roller coaster ride, and I loved every minute. I was lucky to have a front seat and looking forward to more adventures.
